The Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers 233 square miles (603 km2) of Northern England in the county of North Yorkshire. The AONB shares a common boundary with the Yorkshire Dales National Park immediately to the west.

The special quality of the landscape was formally recognised by the Government on 14 February 1994 when it was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

2009 see the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.

This act led to the creation of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and National Parks and also gave powers to strengthen a Public Rights of Way framework including the creation of long distance routes.

A whole series of events and activities are taking place across the country throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary.
