| The Rock is a natural viewing platform with panoramic
view of the valley and river Nidd below which lies just off
Panorama Walk. The name, Panorama Walk, only came about when
Pateley Bridge began to promote itself as a health resort with
scenic walks and plentiful seats for visitors to rest awhile, in
Victorian times.
Everyone in the valley knows the place and it is unusual for
anyone not to pause there to enjoy the view. The Rock was surfaced,
fenced with railings and seats installed by The Pateley Bridge
Improvement Association in 1887, for Queen Victoria's Golden
Jubilee.
The railings and seats had fallen into poor repair until
current owners, John Hickton and Annette Jeffries with friend and
local poet, Mary Sara decided to improve the site once more. They
applied successfully for a grant to install new railings around the
rock. To commemorate the installation of new railings, research on
the history of the site, the route on which it lies and its
immediate environs, has been recorded by Mary Sara. To download a
full copy of the research follow the pdf link below.
This information has been used for the interpretation board
also funded by the AONB. The landowners have plans to replace the
seat so that the site has truly been restored to its Victorian
glory.
