Joint Advisory Committee

The work of the AONB team is managed through the Joint Advisory Committee (JAC).  Their role is to advise local authorities and other agencies about how to best achieve AONB objectives.  Their terms of reference are to:
  • Promote awareness and understanding of Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
  • Advise local authorities, and other bodies, on conservation, informal recreation and environmental management in the AONB. 
  • Advise on the preparation, implementation and review of a Management Plan for the AONB. 
  • Consider and offer advice on development plan policies, proposals and reviews insofar as they relate to the AONB. 
  • Act as a forum for discussion of major issues affecting the character of the AONB and, where appropriate, make recommendations.
  • The JAC also receive an annual review of work undertaken by the AONB team.
The JAC has a maximum membership of 28 including 12 Local Authority representatives as follows:

  • North Yorkshire County Council (3 members)
  • Environment Agency (1 member)
  • Harrogate Borough Council ( 6 members)
  • Ramblers Association (1 member)
  • Hambleton District Council (1 member)  
  • British Horse Society (1 member)
  • Parish Council representatives in the AONB (2 members)
  • Countryside Agency (1 member)
  • Country Land &  Business Association (1 member)
  • Yorkshire Water (1 member)
  • Moorland Association (1 member)
  • English Heritage (1 member)
  • Gamekeepers Association Moorland Branch (1 member)
  • Nidderdale Chamber of Trade (1 member)
  • National Farmers Union (1 member)
  • Council for the Protection of Rural England (1 member)

The adoption by the Joint Advisory Committee in November 2007 of a new Business Plan for the AONB to replace the expired 2001 - 2006 version signaled completion of a major review of its structure and operating arrangements that began in winter 2006 and continued during 2007/08. The Business Plan incorporates a revised Constitution for the Committee, with a new remit and a different structure.
