Public Rights of Way

There are 820 kilometres of public footpaths and bridleways in the AONB and a further 360 kms of unclassified public roads (including unsurfaced tracks) that can be used by walkers, riders, cyclists and vehicles. They form a network that is free to be used by everyone to enjoy the AONB's special qualities and to travel sustainably without harming the environment. Rights of way also encourage people to pursue healthy lifestyles.

North Yorkshire County Council is the Highway Authority and has the legal duty to ensure rights of way in Nidderdale AONB are maintained to a high standard.

The AONB and the County Council are working together to enhance people's enjoyment of the network by:
  • Working with parish councils to develop and promote walks in the AONB.
  • Working with volunteer and user groups to improve the network.
  • Seeking extra funding from various sources to improve and promote  the network.
  • Informing visitors on more sustainable ways of visiting the AONB.
  • Researching ways to further involve Parish Councils in Public Rights of Way.
  • The AONB and the County Council have also been working on the management of the new right of access to open country. Tasks have included:
  • Writing and implementing the access management plan.
  • Working closely with landowners to help them prepare for open access
  • Working closely with user groups to ensure the new rights can be enjoyed fully.
  • Established the open access volunteer service.
