Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs)

There are over 4000 Sites of Special Scientific Interest in England covering just over 7% of the country. SSSIs are some of the countries very best wildlife and geological sites. The unique and varied habitats of SSSIs have developed over hundreds of years through management practices such as grazing and forestry and need active management to maintain their conservation interest.

Natural England advises and helps owners of SSSIs so they are able to manage the site in the best possible way. If Natural England feel that sites are being poorly managed they can take legal action over the site owner such as imposing management schemes and management notices.

When SSSIs are notified the site owner will be given a list of operations which will need English Nature's consent before they may be carried out. Legally written notice has to be given to English Nature of any operations which are planned to be carried out on a site, or you are allowing someone else to carry out.
