Friends Conservation Award

The Friends of Nidderdale AONB Conservation Award is a bi-annual award aimed at property managers in Nidderdale AONB who demonstrate that they are willing to promote the objectives of the AONB.

The way in which you manage your property should recognise the value of features handed down from previous owners and also demonstrate ways in which both landscape character and wildlife protection can be sustained. Ideally, this should not only indicate your understanding of the concept of natural beauty but also show how this can be enhanced through sensitive management.

Three cash prizes are awarded at the Ripley Agricultural Show:
  • First - £300
  • Second - £150
  • Third - £100
The applicant must be the owner or tenant of property within Nidderdale AONB. The principal purpose of your business does not have to involve the management of land. For example, schools and hospitality businesses are eligible to apply for these awards. Some examples of eligible activities may include:
  • Protection and appropriate management of ancient woodlands, veteran trees and woodland features that are an important component of the local landscape
  • The preservation and enhancement of cultural features that reinforce the quality of the AONB, such as flower-rich grasslands, traditional buildings and boundary features, green lanes and ancient track ways
  • The protection of river-banks, water margins and other wetland features
  • Management of your property in ways that may reduce adverse environmental impacts and encourage sustainability, such as the minimal use of herbicides and inorganic fertilisers
  • Encouraging the public appreciation and enjoyment of special features, for example by creating permissive paths, hosting open days or producing information for visitors to the area
  • Any activities that seek to promote better understanding of the AONB and its objectives.

  • Previous first prize winners are not eligible to reapply for three years.
