Historic Environment

Through these web pages it is hoped that there is something that will interest everyone, whether that is information on towns and villages, industrial heritage or how to get involved and improve skills. This historic environment is part of the identity of Nidderdale AONB and as English Heritage says it:

'represents the investment of centuries of skills and resources that can never be replaced. It explains the development of the landscape and gives each place a unique character. It is valuable for its own sake...It is a resource that we need to use carefully and sustainably: we squander or degrade it at our peril'.

The history of human activity in Nidderdale AONB goes back more than 6,000 years making the historic environment particularly rich. The features that remain, such as Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal World Heritage Site, 545 listed buildings, field systems and moorlands, are part of the landscape that we value so much today .
