Woodland Grants

Do you have any land on which you would like to create new areas of woodland?

Ideally, when choosing land to create new woodlands, three things need to be considered: nature conservation and ecology, landscape character, and whether the chosen site will be able to produce marketable woodland products. In 2007, we commissioned a New Native Woodland Opportunities Plan for the AONB. It was produced by Yorwoods, an organisation that works with the forest industry to promote sustainable rural development in the Yorkshire & Humber region, and Leeds University's School of Geography.

As well as detailed information and analysis of native woodlands in the AONB, the Plan contains maps showing land where we think new native woodlands would fit best. The maps are only a rough guide, and individual woodland projects will need careful planning to ensure they fit in with the surrounding landscape and the ecology of the chosen site. You can download the Woodland Opportunities Plan here (PDF 2,239KB).

Grants to help with planting in Nidderdale AONB are now available, thanks to a new scheme managed by Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT). The scheme, funded by £150,000 recently given by the SITA Landfill Trust, aims to increase the area of native broadleaved woodland in the AONB by at least 75 hectares over the next two years.

The grant can be used together with other grants already available, such as those from the Forestry Commission. If needed, full help with designing and planning the woodland will be given free by staff from either YDMT, Yorwoods, the Forestry Commission or the AONB.

If you know of any suitable sites, please contact the YDMT on 015242 51002 or info@ydmt.org, or contact any of the other organisations listed above.
