Practical Conservation Groups

If you have a love of the countryside and conservation and want to get your hands dirty, then why not give one of our practical conservation groups a go.  You don't need any experience - we provide the training and tools - you provide enthusiasm!

What will I get out of it?
A day out in fine countryside, fresh air, exercise, a sense of achievement, making new friends, and plenty of laughs!  We try to ensure that all volunteers get appropriate training for the kind of work that they enjoy doing, so we run special workshops and develop skills on the job. For example:

  • our Tree Wardens attend a series of day workshops (usually Saturdays) on subjects like woodland management, planting, and tree identification.
  • our Countryside Volunteers have developed skills in dry stone walling, fencing techniques, hedge-laying and footpath repair.

All volunteers develop a better understanding of wildlife and conservation.

What will the AONB get out of it?
Better wildlife habitats and a greater variety of wildlife, more trees and woodland, restored cultural heritage, improved footpaths and bridleways.  Farmers gain better stock management so that they can preserve hay meadows, or improve conditions for ground-nesting birds.
